Al Udeid AFB, Qatar

Description

Al Udeid is an Air Force Base that is geographically situated on the eastern border of the Qatar peninsula. It is approximately 70 miles North East of the Saudi Arabian border and 15 miles from the As Sayliyah Army Base.

Living Conditions

  • The rooms are inside a long trailer. Each room has two wall lockers, a bed and a small refrigerator. TV & DVD player are not included, but all rooms are equipped with AFN cable. Sheets, Blankets, and pillows are provided.
  • Electricity is 220v.
  • The bathrooms are in another building adjacent to the living quarters.
  • Laundry: There are no washer or dryers in the living quarters, but there is a free laundry service with a three day turnaround available 24 hours a day.
  • Dining Options: There are three main dining facilities along with a small facility for "to go" orders. There is also a Popeye's chicken, Asian Express, Charley's subs, Subway, Pizza hut, Baskin Robbins, Burger King, Dairy Queen, and a Dunkin Donuts, Coffee bean & Co., and a starbucks.
  • Other facilities: There is one large AAFES/PX exchange and a smaller one near the living quarters. They are both kept well stocked and rarely run out of items.
  • What cannot be purchased on the base can be purchased downtown.
  • There are two state of the art gyms. One is located near the living quarters and the other is located near the PX area. There is one outdoor pool (near the living area) and on indoor pool (in the gym near the PX). There is also an outdoor running track.

Working Conditions

  • 60 hours a week
  • Office hours are 0900-1900

What to Bring

The majority of these items can found in the PX.

  • Small flashlight
  • Durable clothes
  • Comfortable, sturdy shoes
  • Toiletries
  • Shower shoes (rubber flip-flops)
  • Towels (you can usually buy them at the PX, but you may need one en route).
  • Twin sheets (you can usually buy them at the PX) and blanket (you can use a sleeping bag too).
  • Pillow (also typically for sale, but you can never be sure)
  • Exercise clothing - nothing revealing!
  • Pictures of loved ones
  • Personal media devices
  • Sun block
  • Good, dark sunglasses
  • Cargo pants are nice for carrying things. You can't take a purse into dining facilities
  • Don't worry if you forget things. You can always order stuff from the internet.
  • Lightweight cottons and linens are worn during summer months, with warm clothes for cooler evenings and during the winter. Rainwear is advisable during winter.
